![]() If anyone is planning to do a similar project I suggest taking the extra time to track down the correct size tape. As a result I spent a good amount of time, and lost a little blood, using an exacto knife to cut rolls of 1 inch painters tape in half lengthwise. ![]() FYI- I’m sure that 1/2 inch painters tape exists somewhere on the planet, but it does not exist at the Lowes by my house. Next I needed to tape out my mortar lines. The first order of business was to mix the sand texture into the grey paint and cover the entire wall with it. I also purchased a mix in sand texture for my faux mortar. Finally I made my color decisions and purchased a grey mortar color, a base brown in a faux Venetian plaster finish and three highlight and lowlight colors in a satin finish. I got a bunch of paint swatches in shades of red, brown, and grey that I thought were close to a natural brick color and I put them up on my brick fireplace for comparison, where they sat for about 2 weeks while I thought about which ones were the best. That wasn’t the look I was going for so I had to pretty much make it up as I went. Most of them were made with rectangular sponges dipped in red paint and applied in a brick pattern. Nothing that I found online even attempted to look realistic. I started off by googling painted faux brick walls to get an idea of how other people were doing this but I was really disappointed with the results. ![]() Why I got it into my head that exposed brick and cute coffee shops go hand in hand I’m not really sure but I did. A while back I came to the conclusion that I wanted the kitchen to have a fun artsy coffee shop-y feel to it, so I painted three walls a nice warm cafe au lait color and set to work doing a faux brick treatment on the fourth, and biggest, wall. Eventually I got tired of looking at this everydayĪnd decided it was time to get on the kitchen project. There were so many huge projects that needed to be done to make the house inhabitable that less important things like ugly walls in the kitchen got put on the back-burner. When Gene and I bought our house we knew it was a major fixer upper. ![]()
